I know you can't hear me But I want to tell you What lies ahead For us

People won't understand you They'll label you as troublesome They'll keep telling you to try harder They'll make you angry because they think it's funny

They'll cast you out And drift away And you will feel like there's nowhere that you can belong

You'll twist yourself into a bizarre shape Not you, not anyone A perversion of what you think others want Never quite what you want to be

You're going to get tricked and betrayed Hurt and abused You'll end up feeling so hopelessly alone You're going to want to give up so many times Before you finally see what you've been missing

You're going to find the person inside you That you will love with all your heart A person you will proudly show on your outside every day, without reservation

You will embrace what you love Your interests, your passions And find the people that accept them That accept you

It's going to take a lot of pain A lot of loss, a lot of heartbreak But one day, you will know acceptance You will know belonging

You will hear your voice and love it You will see the real you in the mirror And finally be able to say without reservation or doubt

A Place Where You Can Be Loved

You’ve been places where you weren’t appreciated but you stayed anyway because you had nowhere else You’ve been places where you were cast out and you were scared because you didn’t know what to do

You’ve been places where you were another face and you stayed quietly because you wanted to belong

Now you’ve found a place where you can be loved so I hope you stay and let yourself be yourself

Belonging

Everything was beautiful Bright, happy, colorful Full of sparkling, magical wonder I started to smile again Thought that maybe I could fit in And the joy would chase away the thunder Gone were the storms I’d known for so long And I believed with my whole being that I could belong But once again the walls closed in The fear grabbed me and pulled me back in And I ran for a place of safety I do this to myself every time Because anxiety has no rhythm or rhyme Only echoing over and over that everyone hates me It’s exhausting to remember, but I know that it is wrong I know in my heart that I deserve to belong

I Am Not Alone

I used to believe that I was ephemeral so full of doubt I was certain I was invisible Smiling to fit in always reaching hoping, dreaming but never connecting

I was certain that I was wrong that it was my fault that I couldn’t belong

But then something changed People started smiling back when I showed them kindness and reminded me they had my back

People thought of me even when I wasn’t there a song, a picture, a book showed me how much they care

I see now that I am loved more than I could’ve known thanks to you all I know that I am not alone

On the outside staring through glass calling, to no avail feeling like you’re second class When people talk you can’t understand you try to speak, but they dismiss you out of hand

Others get it smiling, laughing with a friend you want nothing more than to feel like you don’t have to pretend

So you move on searching for someplace where you can be more than just another face

But we will welcome you You don’t have to fear Please, come in and join us Because you can belong here

When you're different people don't see a person They see entertainment A walking punch line Your pain and misery Your anguish and anger Are a comedy to them One at which they can laugh

When you speak out It's you against them You raised your voice first So it must be all your fault

But it's not your fault There's nothing wrong with you You're just different And I still believe in you

Stuck on the Outside

I try to get in I try to push past the walls keeping me stuck in the supporting cast I smile and nod I try to talk But I know I don't belong Eventually, away I'll walk

I want to try I want to fit in But what's natural to others only leaves me with questions

I'm stuck on the outside A stranger among friends I don't know when this feeling stops I don't know if it ever ends

So I'll keep walking and hum my own song dreaming of that place where I can belong

Alone Together

You’re not like them Maybe you act a bit different Or you don’t look like everyone else Or they don’t understand you when you talk You laugh when everyone else cries You scream when everyone else laughs The wrong words slip out At the worst possible times

I’ve done those things too We’re not the same as everyone else But we can find a place together Just the two of us

One day, they’ll accept us Because there’s nothing wrong with us But until they see that, We can spend our time alone, together
